Our Day

Each morning our students are greeted at the door by their teacher and are led into the classroom where they can explore and discover what lies ahead for the day. Our classroom is a warm, homelike environment which helps to bridge the gap between home and school. Research shows children are more likely to feel they can be themselves and have a stronger sense of familiarity when their classroom environment feels more like being home. Each child has a cubby space labeled with their picture, which helps to encourage their autonomy and give them a sense of responsibility for their personal belongings.

Morning meeting sets the tone for our day. Each day we greet everyone by name, and then we may share in conversation or discussion, teachers read stories, introduce games/activities, and sing or dance together. This daily ritual helps to build a sense connection, collaboration and trust in our classroom community.

After morning meeting, students return to their play. Each area of the classroom is thoughtfully planned with materials that will encourage children’s curiosities and promote optimal learning in all domains; Cognitive, Social/Emotional, Physical, Language/Literacy. We used an Emergent style curriculum, which is rooted in the work of early childhood theorists, and allows teachers to gain a greater understanding of each child's individual needs and allows for more individualized and meaningful experiences.

The bell rings to signal children of the transition to snack . Teachers and children work together to clean up the classroom and to prepare for snack.

After snack we head outside to our enclosed open air classroom. Students can run and play in our mud kitchen, dig in the sand pit, tap into their creative selves using our outdoor stage or just let their imaginations run wild amongst the trees and natural elements.

Depending on the day, we may take a neighborhood walk to explore the river, historic homes or downtown district, have a visit from Miss Jill, go see Miss Collins at the library, or visit our friends at the Council on Aging and then enjoy some time running and playing in the open fields at Town Hall.

At the end of each day, we say goodbye knowing that our time together has been filled with joy, creating, imagination, reading, observing, conversations, movement, community, music, love and lots of PLAY.
